Sean Cleary - Apprentice Jockey

(5th May 1981-1st Nov 2003)

Sean Cleary riding Hidden Cave

Born to Tom and Kathleen Cleary in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. Sean was one of a family of four boys, Paul, 24 and 16 year old twins, Thomas and Rory. Rory is also a promising apprentice jockey. Sean started riding ponies at the age of four and his love of horses grew as he got older. He progressed into Pony Racing where he rode many winners on the Pony Racing circuit including the Dingle Golden Mile and the Dingle Derby on the same day in 1998.

Sean then joined his uncle, Trainer, Mattie O'Toole where he stayed until he took out an Apprentice Licence with Jim Bolger. Sean spent three years with the Jim Bolger, where he learnt a lot, before he moved to Pat Flynn's yard.

In 2003 he joined us as an Apprentice where he went from strength to strength. Sean had a very bright future ahead of him, and was having his best season ever, having already ridden 14 winners at the time of his fall in Galway which left him with serious head injuries that sadly led to his death.

Sean left behind his girl friend Maggie Farrell and a baby son Sean Junior, who was born as Sean lay in a coma in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
